Marvin Glover Bio
Marvin Glover has traveled all his life, collecting a wide range of musical styles along the way. Born in San Antonio Texas, Marvin moved around with his military family spending his younger years in England listening to artists like the Kinks, David Bowie and Led Zeppelin. Influenced early by his mother, a gospel singer from Selma Alabama, Marvin sang in the church choir until his early twenties. His parents bought him a drum set in the third grade, as "a way to contain their kid," Marvin remembers. "I invited all the kids in the neighborhood that played different instruments over and we learned to play Beatles songs." When his family moved back to the states, Marvin found himself attracted to Motown grooves and funk bands from The Brothers Johnson, Commodores, and The Gap Band to Stevie Wonder. He took flute, piano and guitar lessons and later inherited a homemade bass from a friend in Chicago, where he spent his young adult years exploring the local blues scene. From Chicago he headed south to Houston and joined the airline industry. As fate would have it, on the very first day of orientation while carrying that same bass guitar, Marvin met drummer Dale Carlson and formed a band called The Attendants. They transferred to Hawaii where the synth-pop group played their first live show at a company party in front of thousands of their co-workers. In spring 1986, The Attendants restructured with new guitarist, Wei Chen, singer/keyboardist, Andy Singer and David Hill on bass. The new improved group gained popularity playing the local circuit. Following a busy gig schedule and citing shifting creative interests, the band once again experienced turnover when Carlson and Hill decided to go their separate ways. Glover added a new rhythm section featuring, drummer Pat "Stu" O'Leary and bassist John Longo reshaping the group's sound as they played multiple venues around the island of Oahu, including the University of Hawaii and Waikiki hotspots.
After relocating back to the mainland, a trip to New York inspired Glover and O'Leary to form a new group, Face the News, featuring Brian Marks on guitar, Wade Larson on Keyboards and James Roberts on Bass. The combination was perfect! The results were amazing. The EP, Message to the Nation, featured the guitar driven "I Need You" and the catchy dance oriented "The Coming." Face the News found a new direction and a new audience. Over time, the demands of the gig schedule and pressures within the band left Marks and Glover trying to salvage a broken five way marriage to no avail. Realizing time and music as the great healer of wounds, Glover (now living in Seattle) and Marks reconnected in 1998 and after hooking up with Dale Carlson returned to the studio. Under the new moniker, The Flight Club, they recorded an EP, Reboot, with Kevin Wood, Rodney Yee and Rusty Roberts. Although not a commercial success, the musical chemistry created during The Flight Club recording sessions recharged Glover and he began writing songs for a new full-length album.
After many brainstorming sessions, phone calls and e-mails, Marvin mapped out his solo career path and the search for the right producer was on. It was a friend that introduced Glover to producer, Bruno Modolo Jr., who had recently moved to Seattle from Los Angeles. They hit it off musically, and with a shared vision set a goal to produce a slick recording that did more than yield a few good songs. The idea was to make something that you could listen to in its entirety without skipping around.
The much anticipated solo debut, One, established Marvin's position as a performing singer/songwriter locally as well as landing him gigs in larger markets nationally and in select cities throughout Europe. Recorded in Austin and Seattle during the summer of 2001, One not only spotlights Glover's emerging creative talents it also brought
